Effects of seven silvicultural treatments on terrestrial salamanders
نویسندگان
چکیده
We compared the relative abundance of terrestrial salamanders before and after application of seven regeneration treatments in a low-elevation, southern Appalachian hardwood forest in southwest Virginia. Treatments included understory removal, group selection, two shelterwoods, leave-tree, clearcut, and a control. Salamander relative abundance was signi®cantly lower after harvest on the group selection (p0.005), shelterwoods (p0.007 and p0.015), leave-tree (p0.001), and clearcut treatments (p0.001). There was no signi®cant difference in relative abundance during the same period on the control (p0.788) or understory removal (p0.862) treatments. # 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Effects of Timber Harvests and Silvicultural Edges on Terrestrial Salamanders
Balancing timber production and conservation in forest management requires an understanding of how timber harvests affect wildlife species. Terrestrial salamanders are useful indicators of mature forest ecosystem health due to their importance to ecosystem processes and sensitivity to environmental change. However, the effects of timber harvests on salamanders, though often researched, are stil...
متن کاملEffects of Experimental Canopy Manipulation on Amphibian Egg Deposition
Although effects of forest management on amphibians are relatively well studied, few studies have examined how these practices affect egg deposition by adults, which can impact population recruitment. We quantified the effects of 4 canopy tree-retention treatments on amphibian oviposition patterns in clusters of 60-L aquatic mesocosms located in each treatment. We also related aquatic and terre...
متن کاملScience in the Hardwood Ecosystem Experiment: Accomplishments and the Road Ahead
—Over the next century, the Hardwood Ecosystem Experiment (HEE) in Indiana will provide numerous opportunities for collaborative research on how forest management affects the ecological, economic, and social resources of southern Indiana. Here, we highlight the pre-treatment research conducted at the HEE sites from 2006 through 2008 and discuss the role that pre-treatment differences among expe...
متن کاملEffects of structural complexity enhancement on eastern red-backed salamander (Plethodon cinereus) populations in northern hardwood forests
Managing for stand structural complexity in northern hardwood forests has been proposed as a method for promoting microhabitat characteristics important to eastern red-backed salamanders (Plethodon cinereus). We evaluated the effects of alternate, structure-based silvicultural systems on red-backed salamander populations at two research sites in northwestern Vermont. Treatments included two une...
متن کاملEffects of forest removal on amphibian migrations: implications for habitat and landscape connectivity
1. Habitat loss is a leading cause of global amphibian declines. Forest removal is a particularly significant threat because an estimated 82% of amphibians rely on forests for part of their lives. 2. Biphasic amphibians rely on suitable terrestrial habitat to support their post-metamorphic growth and survival and also to maintain appropriate habitat and landscape connectivity. 3. We created 4 r...
